After the webinar, Dr. Gibbons sat down with our co-founder and co-CEO Clay Whitehead to answer questions from district leaders, educators, and clinicians. Below is a summary of their discussion. Clay: Thank you, Kim. That was fantastic. I really appreciated it. There was just so much in there. I loved how you worked in sustainability, as well, such a key component that all too often gets neglected in discussion. We have tons of audience questions, but before I…

It’s always a pleasure to hear from our clinicians in the field. This month, Lisa George, a school psychologist working with students in Ohio, shares her onboarding experience and what she has liked the best so far about telepractice. Thank you, Lisa, for all that you do! Telehealth was new to me when I started with PresenceLearning, but I felt extremely confident and prepared going into my first real session. The company did an amazing job of preparing me between Telehealth Institute trainings for new clinicians and all the incredible Office Hours from my peers. My Senior Clinical Consultants and Lead Clinicians have been phenomenally helpful, too! Before I started serving kids, I played around in my online therapy room quite a bit, and loaded my queue with…

This summer, approximately 8,000 special educators, SLPs, OTs, school social workers, and school psychologists participated in our on-demand summer webinar series, the Decathlon Challenge. Ten webinars spanned three tracks: autism and attention disorders, behavior and school climate, and legal issues and ethics. Just like our live webinars, attendees had the opportunity to earn certificates of attendance for each webinar, and ASHA and NASP members had the chance to earn continuing education units. Several viewers took the challenge to heart and three SLPs watched all 10 within the first two days of the challenge. Congratulations to our top finishers Robin Klohr, Susan Lautenschlaeger, and Miriam Strassberg! “The webinars contained such a great deal of valuable information that could be readily applied to my work as an SLP.…

Where Do We Go Next?” Dr. Coulter provided an overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its predecessors and the current approaches to ensuring accountability. After the webinar, our co-founder and co-CEO Clay Whitehead and Dr. Coulter answered questions from district leaders, educators, and clinicians. Below is a summary of their discussion. Clay: Thank you for making time to be here. The first question is very simple.Where do we begin with RDA from a tactical point of view? Dr. Coulter: I think it depends on if you are…

“I have a daughter with autism and she attends a public school in Manhattan. Every year it’s a real challenge finding related service providers so she can get an education in a neighborhood, community school setting. Specifically this year, there is a real chronic shortage of occupational therapists. I’m not sure how familiar you are with autism, but this is a kind of therapy that gives kids on the spectrum the sensory inputs their bodies need so that their brains are primed to learn. So I was wondering if you have any plans right now or any actions to try to relieve this chronic shortage.” – Nicole from Manhattan, The Brian Lehrer Show caller New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was stumped by this question during an episode of The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. His response to Nicole was that some New York City schools have “specific programs in them for kids on the autism spectrum,” but he acknowledged that there was more that could be done and that he was unaware of the occupational therapist shortage in the city’s schools. This question led The Brian Lehrer Show to do a follow-up episode solely on the occupational therapist…

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was passed a year ago this December, and while state leaders are in the process of developing transition and implementation plans, many educators are still unsure of how the act will impact their responsibilities. Clinicians who practice in education settings play especially significant roles in the implementation of ESSA, so this July, ASHA published “Every Student Success Act: Key Issues for ASHA Members” to help audiologists and SLPs understand their role in the new law. According to the analysis document, the new law will create “many new opportunities” for SLPs and audiologists, including: the ability to work with state and local leaders as they develop their ESSA transition and implementation plans access to more PD opportunities increased involvement in…

Like many SLPs, mission is important to Gila Cohen-Shaw, a lead clinician with PresenceLearning who has specialized in early child development. And so, for a recent milestone birthday, she looked for a way that she could show her gratitude for the blessings in her life and give something back. She found such an opportunity through Global Volunteers to participate with a group called Reaching Children’s Potential in St. Lucia, which trains caregivers and deploys them throughout the island to work with families and their children. As a telepractitioner, she had the flexibility to travel for two weeks to make a difference. St. Lucia is a beautiful Caribbean island popularly known for its luxury resorts and dramatic landscape. There is, however, another side to paradise: in…
